VIDEO IN CONTESTED PLACES

Media artist and activist Kit gave a talk on their experiences during the opposition to the Coastal GasLink LNG pipeline by the Wet’suwet’en First Nation in British Columbia. Kit was part of a media team present at the Unist’ot’en camp during the escalating conflict with the RCMP. This talk focused on the emotional and physical demands of video journalism as well as the socio-political considerations that are necessary when inserting yourself into an Indigenous contested space as a settler. Kit shared their experiences and strategies based on their experiences with the Wet’suwet’en First Nation and the media team present during the time of the conflict. Work produced from their time at the camp was shared and time for discussion was available and encouraged.
