Tethers: An Artist Talk and Installation by KJ Edwards

About the Talk:

Join DARC’s Indigenous Residency recipient KJ Edwards in discussion about her latest work in progress Tethers, a mixed media installation conceived via hybrid analogue-digital workflows. KJ will touch on the process and embodied experience of shooting 16mm film on the go, while travelling, and reflect on the nature of storytelling through moments of active “looking”. The installation will be presented in the Microcinema until November 26th from 10am to 5pm on weekdays.

About KJ Edwards:

KJ Edwards (she/they) is a Kanien’kehá:ka, mixed-settler filmmaker and media artist. KJ’s family is from Kahnawa:ké and Longueuil, Quebec, Canada; while she was born and raised in Treaty 6 Territory, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Holding a BFA in Film Production from the Toronto Metropolitan University, KJ is trained in narrative, documentary and experimental filmmaking techniques, using both analogue and digital hybrid workflows. They are a 2023 MFA graduate from Emily Carr University of Art + Design where KJ’s thesis work involved eco processing analogue film, reflecting on the unpredictability of the medium, and the ways that dreams and memory can offer creative pathways.

À propos de KJ Edwards:

KJ Edwards (elle/iel) est une cinéaste et artiste multimédia d’origine kanien’kehá:ka, colons mixtes. Native du territoire du Traité n° 6, à Edmonton, Alberta, sa famille est originaire de Kahnawa:ké et de Longueuil, Québec. Titulaire d’un baccalauréat des beaux-arts en production cinématographique de l’Université métropolitaine de Toronto, KJ a suivi une formation en techniques de réalisation narrative, documentaire et expérimentale, utilisant des techniques de travail hybrides analogiques et numériques. KJ est diplômé du MFA 2023 de l’Emily Carr University of Art + Design, où sa thèse observe le traitement écologique du film analogique, analyse l’imprévisibilité du médium et la manière dont les rêves et la mémoire peuvent offrir des voies créatives.

DARC Microcinema is a venue powered by the Digital Arts Resource Centre (DARC), located in Ottawa, Canada. The space is uniquely configured to present installations, screenings, and performances by contemporary artists working within the field of media art and the moving image. The opening of DARC Project Space in January 2018 was part of a major expansion project for DARC, and represents a significant addition to its long history of nurturing and championing experimental practices.
