Announcing DARC Expanded Practice Residency Recipients Summer 2024

Digital Arts Resource Centre (DARC) is proud to present the DARC Expanded Practice Residency for Summer 2024 to Lynda Hall and Hannah Ranger! The Expanded Practice Residency is a three-week intensive artist residency, offered to Extended Access members of DARC who are seeking to develop their current practice, experiment with a new medium, or continue an existing project.

Expanded Practice Residency Recipient Lynda Hall (a woman with curly brown hair and black glasses) looks at the camera with a soft smile. The image is in black and white.

Lynda Hall completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography at the University of Ottawa, and participated in a curatorial residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. Her practice often finds itself outside of traditional gallery spaces, among artists engaged in the exploration of specific sites and communities. Recently, she has been building a series of short films about her two families – the family she grew up with, and her biological family – in which she explores larger notions of time, place and belonging. The first of the series – Alice – was shown at the Detroit Shetown Film Festival, and acquired by the City of Ottawa. Her work has been supported by grants from the City of Ottawa, SAW Video (DARC), Agriculture Canada and ArtsSmarts.

Expanded Practice Residency Recipient Hannah Ranger (a blonde woman with a floral tattoo on her shoulder) holds a red drinks and looks off to the side. She is wearing a red tank top and round dangly earrings.

Hannah Ranger is a visual artist, specializing in felt making, whose work is rooted in the expressive, and relational quality of natural fibres. Hannah maintains a studio in rural Western Quebec, where she is continually evolving work that is based on the natural patterns that emerge in our environment, with a particular interest in macro and micro imagery, and drawing parallels between the environment and biology. Born and raised between rural Quebec and Southwestern Ontario, Hannah was exposed to artmaking at an early age, pursuing informal training in many mediums. The discovery of felt making in 2009 led to a full-time practice and participation in many exhibits, symposiums and collaborations. Her work has been supported by le Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, and the Canada Council for the Arts.

The Expanded Practice Residency provides the recipient with access to DARC’s facilities, including the DARC Microcinema, Soundstage, Digital Edit Suite, and Recording Studio, a fee for an optional artist talk or presentation of their work, and access to an array of audio-visual equipment for the duration of their residency. Artists are invited to find creative ways to experiment with video and moving images, the distribution of sound, and other tactics for presentation and audience engagement.

DARC is proud to have Lynda and Hannah as our Artists in Residence and we continue to be excited to support the work of independent artists through our resources, programming and education!
