Elsewhere: Screening and Artist Talk by Lynda Hall

March 5

6 PM - 8 PM

In celebration of International Women’s Day, we are proud to premiere Elsewhere, a documentary trilogy by DARC’s Expanded Practice Residency artist-in-residence, Lynda Hall.

Elsewhere is a deeply personal exploration of belonging, following the filmmaker’s own adoption story. Lynda began this project with production support from DARC in 2018, and during the Expanded Practice Residency, she received post-production support for the final chapter of the trilogy.

Join us in the Microcinema on March 5th to celebrate the achievement of a talented local filmmaker. Lynda will be in attendance for a Q&A following the screening.

About the event

Elsewhere is a trilogy of short documentary films bearing the names of my parents Alice and Jim, and my birth mother Nancy. Its completion marks a significant milestone in my practice – the culmination of seven years of work. Elsewhere explores themes of belonging, of attachment to places, of ruptures in our lives, and how a connection to family can help define us. All are explored through the lens of adoption. This marks the premiere screening of the entire trilogy, with a run time of 23 minutes. It will be preceded by a short introduction to provide a personal context for the making of this work, and followed by an open discussion with the audience.

About Lynda Hall

Lynda completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography at the University of Ottawa. Her first short film Alice began production in 2018 with a JumpStart grant from SAW Video (now DARC). It was shown at the Detroit Shetown Film Festival in 2019 and acquired by the City of Ottawa for its art collection in 2020. That first film has expanded into a trilogy of short films entitled Elsewhere. Completion of this project was facilitated by an Expanded Practice Residency at DARC in 2024, and a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts in 2025. Past works and curatorial projects have been funded by the City of Ottawa, ArtsSmarts and Agriculture Canada.
