DERECK BASSA

DARC Artists: Meet Dereck Bassa!

Meet Dereck Bassa, music producer and member of Digital Arts Resource Centre (DARC). Watch the video below to learn all about Dereck and his work!

Dereck Bassa creates music under the artist name “13assa” and is an independent Ivorian-Canadian music producer and songwriter currently based in Ottawa, Ontario. Drawing inspiration from various mediums to bring his creations to life, 13assa is heavily inspired by artists such as Tyler the Creator, Björk, Stromae, FKA Twigs and Kid Cudi. His music is a means of self-expression, exploring parts of his psyche and documenting his lived experience through sound. He is constantly challenging, and rediscovering himself creatively and sonically.

His debut single Water 7 is a song about being saved from a dark place with the help of friends and loved ones. It’s about finding the strength to chase your dreams regardless of the outcome after a long period of inaction, and having friends in your corner who will help you swim even when you don’t believe you can. Inspired by the One Piece arc of the same name, Water 7 celebrates community in all its forms, and the love found within. It’s a song about reconnecting with the self, and finally finding the courage to swim.
