We’re Hiring a Social Media and Communications Assistant

POSITION: Social Media and Communications Assistant – Digital Arts Resource Centre (DARC)

CONTRACT TERM: 26 Weeks    

DESIRED START DATE: August 31, 2026*

END DATE: February 26, 2027

WORK SCHEDULE:  4 business days / 32 hours per week

LOCATION: Hybrid – 2 Daly Ave. (Arts Court) – minimum 3 days in office

*Please note: the start date is flexible due to the JCP process

SUMMARY: This position is funded through Ontario’s Job Creation Partnerships (see more details below). This position reports to the Engagement and Mobilization (Communications) Manager and supports the live events, festivals and annual members’ screening hosted by DARC.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support DARC by attending programming, live events and screenings, capturing assets and collateral for social media, website, etc., especially concerning our annual member screening, RESOLUTION.
  • Create, maintain and execute elements to support the centre’s marketing and communications plan across all platforms including social media, website (blog) and podcast.
  • Bring creative concepts and ideas to meetings and supporting the team by pro-actively implementing notes and changes.
  • Assist in preparing newsletters, press releases, social media posts and other communications as needed.
  • Change priorities and communicate hurdles or challenges as they arise.
  • Working on special projects or live event programming with co-op students or interns for content creation, marketing or social media outreach.
  • Support or work in conjunction with DARC staff to create and support the social media and communications for DARC’s annual screening, RESOLUTION, and other DARC partnerships or hosted events like the BIG GAY SCREENING, Canadian Film Day, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Visual AIDS, as needed.
  • Other on-site event support during live events as needed.
  • Work with co-ops, student placements, interns, and partners as needed.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proficient with Google Business Suite and design skills such as Canva;
  • A people person who is positive, responsible, respectful, and enthusiastic;
  • Well-organized, works well under pressure and independently if needed, takes on projects simultaneously and autonomously;
  • Ability to answer questions from members, media and partners via email;
  • Knowledge of implementing social media/content plans or a willingness to learn; 
  • Passionate about artist-run-centres and Ottawa’s media arts and film community is an asset;
  • Bilingualism is an asset.

Additional Qualifications Required: 

Candidate eligibility for JCP is determined according to the following criteria:

  1. An unemployed job seeker or those employed less than 20 hours per week. 
  2. A permanent resident living in Ontario who is legally authorized to work in Canada.
  3. Meet at least 1 of the following criteria:
    • Has an established Employment Insurance (EI) benefit period.
    • Previously established an EI benefit period that has ended within the previous 60 months.
    • Paid employee EI premiums (e.g. Box 18 on the T4) in at least 3 of the last 10 years while earnings have been at least $2000 in each of those years.
    • Received the Employment Insurance Emergency Response benefit (CERB) within the previous 60 months.

NOTE: Persons currently enrolled in full-time academic studies are not eligible for consideration. Those who qualify to establish an Employment Insurance (EI) claim must do so prior to being considered for JCP participation.  

Remuneration:

$704 (gross) per week paid biweekly by the Province of Ontario (average hourly rate: $22.00 based on 4 days/32 hours).
